I use Yahoo as my home page in my web browser. I like Yahoo not because I use Yahoo for search but because I like easy access to a lot of different features and services, especially email and news.
I might consider changing my home page if someone in Kamloops came up with something local that had more than just business listing and announcements. It would also need to be well designed. I think Darryl Schmidt, one half of the sibling duo behind a new local web portal, Kamloopscity.com, has almost hit my sweetpot.
In our interview on Friday, Darryl talked about how his site was focused solely on a local audience, that he waited almost two years - tweaking and populating the site - before launching it publically. We both agree that "under construction" is the most frustrating pair of words you see on a web site.
Local web portals, as a business proposition, had a hard go of it in the dot com era. They still do. Its a pretty tricky balance to have a loyal audience and keep advertisers happy. I think Kamloopscity.com might just have a chance.
